SMITHFIELD NOCTURNE CYCLE RACE, CITY OF LONDON

SMITHFIELD IN THE CITY OF LONDON, FOR THE SMITHFIELD NOCTURNE

This is an annual cycle racing event which starts at about 4.30 on a Saturday, and ends after it is dark.
I go most years and I went along last Saturday, 11 June.
Above are photos of two oil paintings I have completed last year, inspired by the men team races.
This year the penny farthing race was very exciting, they go amazingly fast. Some of my photos are on my Flickr page and they are blurred!

At Smithfield, where the old meat market is still located, there are lots of pubs and bars, cafes and restaurants, which are all buzzing during the Nocturne.  One of them, The Hope, is where we had a brief rest and a half of Young's bitter, and I did this sketch of the very effcient bar girl.  Also I did a couple of pencil sketches of the racing, but this of course was very difficult because of the speed.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL PAINTINGS IN OIL ON CANVAS

TWO SMALLER OIL PAINTINGS I HAVE COMPLETED A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO

These paintings of of Beach Volleyball, which I enjoyed watching when on holiday in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, capture the voluptuous colours of the Caribbean.  The beach game was very popular and lively, and was near the beach bar so a nice place to sit and watch, with my sketch book and camera ready.  The girls often wore bikinis and the boys those long baggy shorts which are not at all flattering!  Evening was the best time to watch, with the long shadows.  Wish I was there right now!

IRISH GUARDS BAND AND POLO GIRLS, WINDSOR

OIL PAINTING FINISHED, IRISH GUARDS BAND AND GIRLS

My oil painting is finished now, measures 50cm x 50cm.  The subject was painted using as inspiration sketches I made at Windsor Great Park polo games, particularly the Cartier Gold Cup, plus photos taken last year and previous years.  I am hoping to return to Windsor Great Park this year and do more sketches of the players and the animated onlookers, in their finery.
